Volkow addressed the summit Wednesday afternoon about &#8220;facing the addiction epidemic&#8221; in the U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In her comments, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2022\/11\/16\/nora-volkow-nida-broad-deregulation-methadone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">as reported by STAT News<\/a>, Volkow was clear about her desire for methadone to be available by prescription. Currently, people who use methadone are required to go to clinics daily to get the medication, and the specialized clinics are few and far between in some areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\"><span class=\"img embed__content\"><img alt=\"METHADONE-DISENSED-DAILY \" height=\"451\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2022\/11\/18\/16182cb4-d01f-49b5-badd-bd18b7c1200d\/thumbnail\/620x451\/50f4af8b1e6f9e5ab24523091ca4d50f\/gettyimages-1238504627.jpg 1x, https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2022\/11\/18\/16182cb4-d01f-49b5-badd-bd18b7c1200d\/thumbnail\/1240x902\/e4d9c7136ab7c1dc3b1a36bea1fb4103\/gettyimages-1238504627.jpg 2x\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\"><span class=\"embed__caption\">Methadone is dispensed daily, often in liquid form, at specialized clinics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>            Hoang Dinh Nam<\/p>\n<p>                      <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s absolutely no reason why not [to allow prescription of methadone],&#8221; Volkow told the summit, according to Stat News. &#8220;There are countries where physicians are providing methadone and the outcomes are actually as good as those they get [at] methadone clinics.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{\" wordcount=\"\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Daniel Patrick Garrett, a methadone user and the director and founder of Tennessee Harm Reduction, told CBS News that Volkow&#8217;s comments represent a positive step.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great. It&#8217;s great,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I wish this would have happened sooner &#8230; These comments, I think, are a step in the right direction.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey Bratberg, a clinical professor at the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy, said he read Volkow&#8217;s comments with &#8220;great enthusiasm,&#8221; though he warned that physicians would likely need education and training on how to best treat opioid use disorder.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Methadone has saved countless lives in Canada, Australia, several countries in Europe, and around the globe, providing more destigmatized care in more places safely and effectively,&#8221; he told CBS News.<\/p>\n<p>Volkow also called for pharmacists to be allowed to dispense methadone in consultation with physicians. Previously, she has called for similar accessibility, including in a <a href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/about-nida\/noras-blog\/2022\/08\/five-areas-where-more-research-isnt-needed-to-curb-overdose-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NIDA blog post<\/a> in August in which she said methadone and similar treatments have been proven to make an impact.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The full opioid agonist methadone (in use for half a century) and the partial agonist buprenorphine (first approved two decades ago) have proven to be life-savers, keeping patients from illicitly using opioids, enabling them to live healthy and successful lives, and facilitating recovery,&#8221; she wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/articles\/2022\/08\/11\/federal-agencies-have-substantial-authority-to-boost-methadone-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pew Research Center<\/a>, in 2019, more than 400,000 people in the U.S. took methadone for addiction treatment, out of an estimated 1.6 million people who experienced opioid use disorder that year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/nchs_press_releases\/2022\/202205.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> estimated that about 107,000 Americans died of drug overdoses. The vast majority \u2014 about 81,000 \u2014 of those overdoses were due to opioids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Methadone is a full-opioid agonist, and the restrictions are in place to prevent diversion of the substance. But according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/publications\/research-reports\/medications-to-treat-opioid-addiction\/what-treatment-need-versus-diversion-risk-opioid-use-disorder-treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2021 report by NIDA<\/a>, methadone diversion is most common when the drug is used to treat pain, not opioid use disorders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The medication is present in some overdoses: In August of 2022, 3.2% of overdoses involved the substance, <a href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/2022\/07\/percentage-of-overdose-deaths-involving-methadone-declined-between-january-2019-august-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to NIDA<\/a>, but that is a decline from January 2019, when it was present in 4.5% of overdoses. A medication similar to methadone, called buprenorphine, referenced in Volkow&#8217;s 2022 blog, is less tightly regulated and delivers similar effects, but doesn&#8217;t always work to treat dependency on fentanyl, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fake-pills-fentanyl-overdose-deaths-some-look-like-candy-dea\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">a synthetic opioid<\/a><\/span> that has permeated the U.S. drug supply. A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34816821\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2021 study published in the Journal of Addiction Medicine<\/a> found that people who use buprenorphine to treat fentanyl dependency may still experience severe withdrawal symptoms at some stages of treatment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Food and Drug Administration also <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fda-xylazine-drug-overdoses\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">recently warned about the risks of xylazine<\/a><\/span>, an animal sedative and pain reliever that has entered the nation&#8217;s illicit drug supply.
