MANILA, the Philippines \u2014 A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Philippine island of Luzon on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, badly damaging a hospital and buildings in a northern province and sending strong tremors through the capital, Manila.<\/p>\n
A hospital in Abra province was evacuated after the building partially collapsed following the quake, but there were no casualties reported, officials said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are still experiencing aftershocks. We have received reports of damages to houses. But so far no casualties,\u201d said Mayor Rovelyn Villamor in the town of Lagangilang in Abra province.<\/p>\n \u201cWe don\u2019t have power supply because that\u2019s automatically cut off due to danger,\u201d Villamor told DZRH radio.<\/p>\n The public information office of Abra province posted photographs on its Facebook page showing buildings badly damaged, with walls with huge cracks crumbling.<\/p>\n USGS said the earthquake\u2019s epicenter was about 6 miles east-southeast of the town of Dolores and occurred at a shallow depth of 6 miles.<\/p>\n \u201cThe focus of attention is on Abra and nearby provinces. This is a major earthquake. We expect strong aftershocks,\u201d Renato Solidum, director of the state seismology agency, told DZMM radio station.<\/p>\n Eric Singson, a congressman in the northern province of Ilocos Sur, told DZMM radio station the quake had been felt strongly.<\/p>\n \u201cThe earthquake lasted 30 seconds or more. I thought my house would fall,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cNow, we are trying to reach people …. Right now there are aftershocks so we are outside our home.\u201d<\/p>\n The quake was also felt in Manila and the city\u2019s metro rail system was halted at rush hour after the quake, the transport ministry said.<\/p>\n<\/picture>
