Yes, that sentence you just read didn\u2019t make a lot of sense, but Amazon\u2019s search engine thinks it does! The algorithm has apparently decided that not only<\/em> do the new charcoal colored earbuds count as a \u201ccharcoal grill,\u201d they\u2019ve apparently been the best-selling product in that category for over 24 hours now (via Reddit<\/em><\/a> and Mishaal Rahman<\/a>) without Amazon doing anything about it.<\/p>\n

In general, I wouldn\u2019t read too much into any badges you\u2019d see on an Amazon product. As another example, did you know the \u201cAmazon\u2019s Choice\u201d badge<\/a> isn\u2019t a stamp that indicates any sort of quality whatsoever? It\u2019s algorithmically doled out to all sorts of products that you wouldn\u2019t think deserve it.<\/p>\n

And don\u2019t get me started on Amazon\u2019s user reviews<\/a> \u2014 though there, the company does clearly know it has a problem, and pursues large enforcement actions (like this recent crackdown on Facebook fake review groups<\/a>) every year.<\/p>\n

Last month, The Wall Street Journal wrote about the deluge of random-letter-generator Chinese brands<\/a> that appear when you look for products. It\u2019s interesting to see how many of them rank in the charcoal grill list, too \u2014 including such storied brands as RESVIN, Cecarol, Oilzz, YSSOA, and DOIT. <\/p>\n
