As I scour 35 to 40 websites a day to make sure I\u2019m up to speed on the tech world, I\u2019m seeing a common theme: drama. There\u2019s a lot of it in the AI world right now, and unsurprisingly, it\u2019s mainly humans causing the buzz. While everyone from Elon Musk to The New York Times is busy suing OpenAI, I\u2019m\u00a0just focused on whether these AI chatbots actually\u00a0work<\/i>.<\/p>\n
So, how useful are they, really? I did the work for you. I compared the\u00a0free<\/i>\u00a0versions of\u00a0ChatGPT\u00a0from OpenAI,\u00a0Google Gemini\u00a0and\u00a0Perplexity\u00a0to see how well they helped with some real-life scenarios.\u00a0<\/p>\n
1-MINUTE TECH CHANGES FOR MORE PRIVACY<\/strong><\/p>\n First, I backed out of “Aunt Patty\u2019s” family meal\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n Without hurting her feelings, of course. I got our three bots to draft an email politely excusing me from a family meal put on by an imaginary aunt.\u00a0We\u2019ve all been there<\/i>.<\/p>\n Winner: Gemini.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>It acknowledged the “effort and love” the aunt was putting into the “special gathering” and said I was “incredibly disappointed to miss out.”\u00a0Bonus<\/strong>: It suggested an alternative, like a video call.<\/p>\n Then, I launched a “million-dollar” business<\/strong><\/p>\n “Shark Tank” here I come! I asked the bots to write a pitch for my hot new business idea: A phone case that physically locks your handset so you\u2019re not distracted from work or family time.<\/p>\n I\u2019M GIVING YOUR COMPUTER A QUICK SPEED UPGRADE<\/strong><\/p>\n Winner: ChatGPT\u2019s “FocusGuard.”<\/strong>\u00a0I\u2019m giving this one to ChatGPT (and not just because it was the most flattering). It was the most imaginative and even included made-up quotes! It raved about “Focus Guard\u2019s” “ingenious” benefits for productivity, well-being and relationships.<\/p>\n Last up, I planned a hike<\/strong><\/p>\n Of course, these big models don\u2019t actually “know” anything, but they\u2019ve read a lot of\u00a0human<\/i>\u00a0knowledge \u2014 so I asked for some advice on planning a short hike with my husband.<\/p>\n My favorite:<\/strong> ChatGPT.\u00a0It hit all the basics in a super clear and concise way \u2014 bullet points for the win! It reminded me to check the weather, research the trail, tell someone where we were going, avoid the hottest part of the day and (of course) bring water and first aid.\u00a0Bonus: It reminded me not to litter in nature.<\/p>\n HOUSE GOP LAWMAKER PROPOSES USING AI TO CUT FEDERAL RED TAPE, STREAMLINE SERVICES<\/strong><\/p>\n Final score: ChatGPT 2, Gemini 1, Perplexity 0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Listen, if AI can help us avoid awkward social interactions, it\u2019ll be a crowning achievement.
