Blusher is one makeup item that is often avoided by those with aged complexions but beauty experts claim that this shouldn’t be the case.

In fact, it’s a cosmetic that is rarely, if ever left behind by professionals when it comes to creating a more youthful appearance.

While there are countless makeup artists and beauty bloggers who have supported this on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube, celebrity makeup artist Olivia Todd also agrees.

Not only is a staple in her kit when working with royals including Lady Amelia and Eliza Spencer, but also celebrities like Kerry Katona.

However, there’s only one kind of blusher she will use for a seamless look – products in the form of a cream.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Olivia said: “Cream blushes are more flattering on mature skin as it has a hydrating sheen which gives a more youthful glow.

“Powders some sometimes sit in creases (fine lines and wrinkles) and therefore don’t look as seamless.

“If you’re looking for a lifting effect, apply your cream blush across the cheek and using a fluffy brush, blend upwards, slightly into the temples.”

The makeup artist also recommended taking it a step further than just applying the pigment on the cheeks. She said: “I also love to use some blusher across the bridge of the nose!”

Not only does this add more warmth to the skin but also mimics the effect of being in the natural light of the sun by hitting the high points of the face.

Choosing the perfect shade to suit each individual skin tone is incredibly easy to do too, according to an expert at the skincare makeup brand Jane Iredale.

They suggested: “For a natural look, choose a blush with the same undertone as your skin. If you want a bold-looking blush, pick one with the opposite undertone as your skin.

“Therefore, If you have a warm skin tone (a yellow undertone), choose a warm blush shade for a natural look and a cool blush shade for a pop of colour.”

Blush for warm undertones includes coral, peach, tangerine and brown shades while cool is more fuchsia, pink, raisin or berry-toned.

Those in the market for new makeup should consider creamy and blendable formulas such as the Blush Sticks by Glow For It (£14.00), which now has an expansive shade-range.
