The 31st instalment of 76-year-old Patterson\u2019s series about detective Alex Cross was published recently and Amazon Prime Video is developing a TV series that he hopes will \u201ccompete with some of the wonderful detective stuff you already have on the BBC. Happy Valley \u2013 that\u2019s one of my favourites\u201d.<\/p>\n
A lot of Patterson\u2019s books \u201care about our darkest fears \u2013 things that go bump in the night and night terrors\u201d \u2013 and he admits to getting scared by his own writing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I\u2019m writing, if I don\u2019t feel it, my fear is the reader won\u2019t either. So if it\u2019s supposed to be a frightening scene, if I\u2019m not feeling it, if I\u2019m not surprised then I don\u2019t think the reader will be.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Patterson has plenty to be getting on with. He\u2019s always working on \u201cfour or five things at the same time\u2026 I never have writer\u2019s block.<\/p>\n
\u201cPart of the reason is I can just jump to another project. Stressing over things is not helpful, I think. Sometimes when you let it go and you keep writing, all of a sudden something would pop out of thin air.\u201d<\/p>\n
For Patterson, inspiration can come in strange places \u2013 such as during a recent visit to the Jersey Shore with wife Susan on a \u201creally windy, cold, rainy day. We all went for a walk over to the ocean and got on the beach.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was out there about 10 minutes and I said, \u2018Screw this, I\u2019m going back to the hotel\u2019. There was a little road right in front of the hotel and this man was going by on a bicycle\u2026<\/p>\n
