Reddit grandmother uncovers family mystery after giving grandchild DNA test

[ad_1]

A grandmother discovered a secret her son and his wife tried to keep from their family for over 15 years after she agreed to pay for her granddaughter’s DNA test.

Reddit user False-Worldliness664 admitted she long had doubts about her granddaughter Lindsay because she “had blond curly hair while the rest of the family has dark hair”.

However, she didn’t see the need to investigate further until the 15-year-old complained about her parents forbidding her from taking an ancestry test.

The teen’s biology teacher also fuelled her doubts further when she explained it was “odd” for the girl to have inherited some traits from her family.

The Reddit grandmother said: “Now Lindsey (15) has it rough being middle child and she looks different from her siblings.

“I truly was confused about how she had blond curly hair while the rest of the family has dark hair. I thought genetics was being weird and I love her.

“The issue came up when Lindsey told me her parents banned her from getting an ancestry test. I told my son and DIL that there was something fishy around her birth she needs to know.

“They denied it and told me to leave it alone. Now Lindsey is in high school and she went to her biology teacher. To put it bluntly, the teacher said it was odd for her to have some traits.”

The grandmother ultimately agreed to pay for her granddaughter’s DNA test – and discovered the woman she believed to be her mother was not genetically related to her.

The woman reported Lindsey was upset about “being lied to” and her son and daughter-in-law are refusing to speak to her because she paid for the test.

She added: “Long story short she is not her mother’s kid. My son got someone else pregnant and her bio mom gave her up.

“This has blown up the family while Lindsey is pissed about being lied to, I am getting a ton of heat for getting her a DNA test. Now they won’t talk to me which is making Lindsey even more mad at them.”

Reddit users defended the woman, arguing the teen should’ve been told about her origins if only so that she could have a correct medical family history in case of an emergency.

User Shake_Speare423 wrote: “Your son and his wife suck for lying to her until she is 15 about something so important and trying to keep lying to her even after she obviously started to question things.

“There are medical reasons a person might need to know what their genetics are/are not and if you hadn’t helped her she would have found out some other way.”

RemembrancerLirael added: “People have a right to know their genetic heritage. Lying about adoption is linked to increased suicidal ideation, anxiety, & depression. You put her safety & comfort ahead of your son’s preferences.

“My grandparents helped my parents lie to me about my adoption & not only have I never forgiven any of them, I’m still in therapy over all of it.”
