Tom Holland may be Spider-Man in Disney’s MCU thanks to a deal with Sony, but the latter studio continues to churn out Marvel villain solo movies set in other universes.
Following Tom Hardy’s Venom, Jared Leto’s Morbius and the delayed Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter comes Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web.
However this time the latter’s a heroine facing Ezekiel Sims, a villain with Spider-Man-like abilities, as can be seen in the first trailer.
Meanwhile, Sydney Sweeney plays Spider-Woman among a foursome of female Spider-heroes.
It’s unclear yet if this is set in the same universe as Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Mans, the other non-MCU villains or in another reality entirely.
The film’s synopsis reads: “‘Meanwhile, in another universe…’ In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.”
Madame Web hits UK cinemas on February 16, 2024.
