I saved for a month to buy sneakers for my boyfriend – his reaction surprised me

A young woman from Mexico had diligently saved up to surprise her boyfriend with a pair of luxury sneakers.

However, her well-intentioned gesture took an unexpected turn, causing a social media uproar after she uploaded a video of herself to TikTok discussing the incident.

The incident quickly went viral on various social media platforms (racking up more than seven million views on TikTok), where outraged users shared their thoughts on the situation and offered support to the young woman involved.

The TikTok user, known as Mishell, shared her journey of saving up to purchase a pair of Nike sneakers for her boyfriend.

The description in the video says: “I saved for a month to buy them, and I finally got them.”

According to her video, Mishell had ordered a pair of Nike Air Force shoes, with a price tag of approximately 1,600 Mexican pesos (around £75). She eagerly awaited their arrival, having poured her heart and soul into this gift.

However, things took a turn when Mishell included a heartfelt letter with the sneakers, expressing her love and hopes that the gift would make up for a particular item she hadn’t included—Hot Wheels toy cars. Based on the note, it seems as if her boyfriend had previously expressed his desire to receive those particular toy cars for his birthday.

In response, her boyfriend, whose name wasn’t disclosed in the TikTok, sent a text message on WhatsApp that left Mishell shocked and heartbroken.

His message read: “Mmmm… it’s serious, Mishell. Everyone shows off their cars, and you can’t be bothered to give me something like that. You always give me what you want. It’s always the same; I’m getting tired.”

The online community was quick to react to this unfortunate situation. Many users expressed their disappointment with the boyfriend’s reaction and empathized with Mishell’s efforts to make a meaningful gesture.

Comments flooded in, such as “What’s wrong with him?”, “He’s so ungrateful,” and “Ask for the sneakers back, sell them, and buy something for yourself.”

Other users on TikTok pointed out the value of the sneakers, saying, “I’d take the Air Force over Hot Wheels cars any day,” and “He received something more expensive, given with love and effort, but he can’t appreciate it. You should reconsider your relationship.”
