According to Matt Powell, who goes by @mattpowell05 on TikTok, using a cleaning brush on your radiator could save you precious energy.
Showing off his cleaning gadget in a clip, Powell demonstrated how sliding it down the middle of the radiator can remove clumps of dust that absorb heat.
His video was posted along with the tags #moneysaving #winter #costofliving #centralheating and #radiator.
Radiator cleaning brushes retail for just £7.99 on Amazon, while Lakeland sells a microfibre version of the tool for just £9.99, while Temu offers them for as little as £2.02.
The hack racked up more than 154,000 likes and several hundred comments from mesmerised viewers.
To avoid letting the dust create a mess once it’s fallen out of the radiator, one viewer proposed: “Put some kitchen roll or a puppy pad or paper or something below the radiator before your start for easy cleanup.”
To make the task easier, another viewer proposed dismantling the top grill of the radiator. She wrote: “You can pop the sides and top bit off those radiators pretty easily.”
For those who can’t get their hands on the handy gadget, an alternative hack was proposed by one savvy viewer.
“Put a wet towel under the heater, use a hairdryer, and block from the top. Dust gets shot out the bottom and sticks to the wet towel. Done,” noted the TikTok user.
The hack comes shortly after a woman recently proposed using tin foil to maximise the heat of your radiator.
Many who watched the content creator’s video confirmed that they’d used the method for more than 20 years, while others had never come across it before.
The woman explained: “Grab your foil, tear a healthy bit off, shove it behind a radiator and enjoy the extra heat!”
“We understand it’s an old hack but people need this now more than ever! For those who can’t afford radiators, we have a whole page of other hacks!”
